Paper 7: Documented Essay
Date Due: Dec. 3
Assignment: Write a documented essay on either The Scarlet Letter or Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass or The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn using your previously written in-class essay as a foundation. The paper should contain material based on research from at least one library (book) source from the PHS library and at least two sources from the Alabama Virtual Library or other approved databases. The finished documented paper must have material and citations from at least three secondary sources. Material from the secondary sources may be quoted, paraphrased, or summarized; the documented essay must include at least two quoted passages and two paraphrased/summarized passages from the three secondary sources (from all three, not from each one). You may use more than three secondary sources if you wish.
Note: DO NOT USE any unapproved database such as Spark Notes, 123helpme.com, echeat.com, bookrags.com, enotes.com, CliffsNotes, Gradesaver, or any other website of a similar nature. If in doubt, check with Mrs. K first! You will not be allowed to use unauthorized sources, even if it means you have to redo your paper on the day it is due! (With late penalty!)
Length: at least three body paragraphs of 8-10 sentences each; also short introductory and concluding paragraphs.
Outline: If you do have an outline for your original essay, write a topic outline based on that paper. This outline will provide a list of subject headings to be used in note taking and writing. If you do not have an outline, make one for note taking.
Index Cards: You must use 4" x 6" index cards for source cards and for note cards. Follow the correct form for these as indicated in English, pp. 350-355 and instructions on handouts.
Form for Final Copy: The envelope must contain the following items: source cards, note cards, thesis and outline, and original essay (Papers 4, 5, or 6), and documented essay rough draft. The final copy consists of a title page, a revised thesis and outline page, the paper itself, and works cited page.
Grading: You will receive a major grade for the source cards and note cards and another grade for the rough draft; the documented essay will be a double major grade. Details on grading criteria of the documented essay will be given before Nov. 19.
Procedure: These dates are subject to change--pay attention in class.
