10th Grade Pre-AP English Midterm Exam Study Guide
2nd Period Exam is Tuesday, Dec. 13 from 8:05-9:40 (check-in 1st period first)
Exam Procedures: You will need pencils to take the test. The exam will start as soon as class begins; use your time well and don't rush.
Books: You will have Elements of Literature available during the literature portion of the test; also bring your handout/online copies of the Hurston essay, Williams poem, the Presidential speeches, Winthrop sermon, Mayflower Compact, extra Bradstreet and Taylor poems, Rowlandson excerpt, Franklin excerpts, and Declaration of Independence (these can be found on www.speakwrite.net).
PART A: Vocabulary. Words will be selected from lists given in class. To review these lists, look under “Class Notes” on the English page of the website, www.speakwrite.net. This will make up about 25% of the exam. The questions will be multiple choice, based on the definitions as the words are used in the literature.
PART B: Rhetoric and Writing Skills About 15% of the exam will be based on class notes and activities on rhetoric and writing. You should know the writing process and rhetorical devices discussed in class and in Chapter 1 Everyday Use, the SOAPSTone method of analysis, descriptive writing techniques, and literary analysis.
Part D: Literature. About 60% of the exam will be multiple choice questions on the literature we studied. This part of the test is open-book but not open-notes; however, you should be familiar with the material. You will not have time to reread all or even portions of the literature during the test.
