Creative One-Pager: Rhetorical Devices in Puritan Literature

Materials: art paper or plain typing paper (8 1/2 x 11), construction paper, colored pencils, markers, paint, or crayons

Optional supplies: computer, computer graphics program, printer, ink

Assignment: Follow these instructions for completing this assignment. This assignment is due on ? (to be decided)

  1. Choose a passage of at least 25 words from any selection of Puritan literature we studied that contains the use of a rhetorical device, such as allusion, dichotomy, exemplum, inversion, metaphor, personification, simile, symbolism, or vivid imagery, used to convey concepts of Puritan beliefs.
  2. Make a sketch to represent the passage, or use a computer graphics program to illustrate the scene.
  3. Type or write neatly the passage from the literature on your one-pager.
  4. At the top of the page write the rhetorical device exemplified in the quotation.
  5. At the bottom of the page, identify and explain the Puritan belief the quotation suggests or illustrates.
